The customer has gone over a balance, credit or transaction limit on their card. What Stripe says and what Dunity does with it.

What it means

Stripe returns card_velocity_exceeded when the customer has exceeded the balance, credit limit or transaction amount limit available on their card.

Stripe’s next step for it is that the customer contacts their card issuer.

From Stripe’s decline codes and card declines docs.

Should you retry it?

It isn’t on Stripe’s list of hard declines, so a retry isn’t ruled out. A limit is a condition on the card, so the payment can go through if the customer sorts it out with the issuer or uses another card.

From Stripe’s Smart Retries and card declines docs.

What to do about it

What the customer needs to do

  • Contact their card issuer for more information, which is Stripe’s advice for this code.
  • Or use another card.

What you can do

  • Ask the customer to check the card’s limits with their bank.
  • Give them a page where they can add another card.

What Dunity does

  • Dunity records the decline code and emails your customer once, with a link to update their card. It then retries the charge 24 hours later, up to 5 attempts.
  • Dunity has no special handling for this code, so it retries on the standard schedule.
  • The dashboard has no group of its own for it, so it shows under “Other”.

What Dunity does is read from its code, not assumed. The whole flow is on how Dunity works, and every code is on the decline codes hub.

Card velocity exceeded questions

What people ask about this code.

How is card_velocity_exceeded different from insufficient_funds?

Stripe describes card_velocity_exceeded as going over a balance, credit or transaction amount limit, and insufficient_funds as not having enough money or credit. The descriptions overlap, so go by the code you received.

Should I wait before retrying?

Stripe doesn’t give a waiting time for this code. Dunity retries after 24 hours by default, and you can change that in Settings.
